alocasia-chienlii-antoro-velvet
Alocasia "chienlii" (Antoro Velvet)

Alocasia "chienlii" or Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet' is an as-yet undescribed, medium-sized Alocasia from Borneo. Although the epithet "chienlii" sounds like a species name, it is not yet the official scientific name of this species. It is (allegedly) to be described in the near future and then given this name, which is a tribute to the photographer and botanist Ch'ien Lee, whose photos of rare plants are among the best and are even often used by botanists (yes, I am a fan). Nevertheless, until its description, this Alocasia has no scientific name and the epithet "chienlii" should be put in quotation marks.

This Alocasia originates from the south of the island of Borneo, specifically the sub-district of Nanga Mahap, Sekadau Regency (Indonesia). It grows on shady, consistently slightly moist, and rather stony slopes between the cracks of large boulders in clay, moss, and foliage. It was first cultivated in 2017 by the Indonesian plant collector Antoro, after whom it is also named.

It grows to about 40 to 50 cm tall, even larger in nature, and, depending on growing conditions, has dark green to completely black, hairy leaves that can reach about 30 cm long and 20 cm wide. The leaves are rather thin. It does not belong to the so-called "Jewel Alocasias" with thick, hard leaves.

The upper sides of the leaves are highly metallic glossy and covered with numerous tiny tubercles (bumps), each bearing a hair. The numerous leaf veins are also prominent. From below, the leaves are even more hairy and partly black, partly deep violet. Fresh leaves are more intensely green and darken over time. The very dark color develops only with low light and good conditions. With plenty of light, the leaves are rather dark green and purple underneath.

The petioles are dark red to purple and have a few black, glossy glandular spots. The flowers are white.
