alocasia-scalprum
Alocasia scalprum

My absolute favorite species, along with Alocasia azlanii!

It is one of the smallest Alocasias, reaching only about 20 to 25 cm in height. The leaves grow to a maximum length of 25 cm (but are usually around 15 cm) and are only about 3 to 5 cm wide. They are very narrow and arrow-shaped, especially on larger plants. The leaves are thickened and leathery, with a strong texture on the upper side due to the primary and secondary veins. On the upper side, they are covered with a thick cuticle (waxy layer on the epidermis), which makes them highly glossy. The color of the leaves varies greatly depending on the location. They develop their most beautiful color in low light. A desaturated dark green with a bluish tint. Due to the color, texture, and gloss, it not only looks like plastic but also feels like it!

Unfortunately, due to its gloss and dark color, it is very difficult to photograph. It is best to see it in person ;)

Its origin is unknown. This species was described after a specimen that was cultivated in the botanical garden in Munich. Alistar Hay, who described the species, notes that the species is well-known in cultivation in the Philippines and is one of several (but very different-looking) plants from Samar Island. The cultivar that was eventually described as the new species Alocasia scalprum was known as Alocasia 'Samar Lance'. Thus, A. scalprum may originate from Samar. To this day, however, it has never been observed in the wild by botanists.

You will receive a mature plant, approx. 20 cm high in a 14 cm pot.

Please note: This species really dislikes being repotted, and a pot size of 14 cm is absolutely sufficient for long-term cultivation!
