It is named after Dinh Thieu Du, who was the first to collect the type specimens of this new species. It grows in the undergrowth of forests at altitudes of approximately 1200 to 1500 meters above sea level in a shady and humid environment, in rock crevices on sandstone slopes, alongside mosses, ferns, and orchids. Like many begonias from this region, it enters a period of dormancy. In nature, it grows and develops leaves from March to April, produces flowers and fruit from about May to October, and the leaves wither and fall off in December, after which the plants enter dormancy until February. Temperatures are lowest between January and December (around 18°C during the day, 10°C at night) and rise from March to October (around 26°C during the day, 16°C at night). This rhythm is maintained even in cultivation, which is why it does not thrive in typical, permanently warm and humid tropical terrariums. It prefers mild to cool temperatures and should undergo a dry winter dormancy. Seedlings can initially be kept warm and humid to accelerate growth, but in their second year they should also be exposed to this rhythm and cooler temperatures.

Our tip: An unheated bottle garden often provides good conditions for this plant! Just make sure it doesn't get too hot in summer.

Begonia dinhdui has an underground creeping rhizome and bears its leaves on (comparatively) very long petioles. It grows to about 20 cm tall, but usually remains smaller. It is normal for the petioles to bend downwards. The leaves themselves are about 8 cm long and 4 cm wide and exhibit a pale green, silvery coloration with black markings. The species displays strong iridescence in low light, but only in the black-marked areas, giving it a truly unique appearance. The flowers are pink and borne on flower stalks approximately 10 to 15 cm long.

It belongs to the Jackia section.

[/expand]

[/porto_content_box]

You will receive a young plant with approximately 5 leaves in a 5cm pot. This is roughly equivalent to pictures 3 & 4 in the gallery.
These seedlings can initially be cultivated "normally" (i.e., under tropical conditions), but once they reach their adult size, they should be given cooler temperatures and a winter dormancy period in their second year!
