Lita or Begonia U560. Both names were (and are) in use before it was identified as Begonia segregata . It originates from the mountain forests of Ecuador and Colombia, where it grows at altitudes of 1300 to 3200 m in the temperate to cool cloud forests of the Andes.

In nature, it grows as a vine, ground cover, or trailing plant in the moss cushions of cloud forests, where the moss coats the ground and the trunks and branches of trees. The leaves are pointed, covered with a few hairs, and can take on a blue/turquoise iridescence in low light. They remain small, only about 2 to 5 cm long. Nevertheless, it cannot truly be called a miniature species, as these plants can form quite large, loose cushions, with individual stems easily exceeding 1 meter in length! This is what makes it so beautiful.

We originally identified this plant as Begonia maurandiae , but this proved to be incorrect after it flowered for the first time in our garden! The striking flowers leave no doubt that this is Begonia segregata . The species is closely related to B. maurandiae , and the leaves are indeed very similar, but the flowers are quite different. In B. segregata, flowers always appear in groups of three, with one male and two female flowers. The male flowers are very conspicuous, bright orange to red, and open only a tiny slit. Inside, in addition to the stamens, are two staminodes. These sterile stamens, modified into flat, broad shields, block the path to the fertile stamens. A potential pollinator must overcome this double obstacle to reach the pollen. In comparison, the female flowers are very inconspicuous. They are green and have almost completely reduced petals; the stigmas are fully exposed.

It belongs to the Gobenia section.

[/expand]

[/porto_content_box]

You will receive a strong young plant in a 6cm pot.

Please note: Begonias of the Gobenia section tend to lose many or even all of their leaves within a few days of any environmental change (including shipping and acclimatization at your location!). This is normal and unavoidable!

They will grow again after 2 to 3 weeks, provided the growing conditions are right.

Please do not repot after shipping and place the vine on slightly moist sphagnum moss .
