There, it is warm year-round and at least periodically very dry. This begonia has several adaptations to this aridity: its leaves are thickened and hairy, which protects them from evaporation, and its flat, prostrate growth habit, in which the leaves are pressed to the ground, helps to retain moisture beneath them.

The leaves are a desaturated dark green, appearing black in the right light. The main veins are highlighted in a light green. The upper leaf surface is covered with numerous small bullae (bumps) bearing reddish hairs. The undersides of the leaves are light green and reddish and even more densely hairy. The leaves grow to about 18 cm long and 10 to 12 cm wide. They are held horizontally (if the plant is able to do so), just above the ground, creating a miniature greenhouse effect that allows condensation to collect underneath them in nature. Begonia soli-mutata has a creeping growth habit.

The flowers of B. soli-muatata are borne on flower stalks up to 30 cm tall and are about 1 cm in size and white.
