It grows in West Africa, is adapted to drought, compact, branched with thickened, woody stems, and has yellow flowers. So, in every aspect, it is completely different from the species sold here. How this undescribed species from South America came to be known as \" \u003cem\u003e*Biophytum zenkeri\u003c\/em\u003e *\" is a complete mystery to us.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBiophytum\u003c\/em\u003e belong to the wood sorrel family (Oxalidaceae). Although they resemble mimosas and their leaflets can fold together, they are not closely related. With their mostly unbranched, upright stems and pinnate, circularly arranged leaves, they are reminiscent of small palms. \u003cem\u003eBiophytum\u003c\/em\u003e are usually self-fertile and even self-seed through bursting seed capsules once they reach flowering maturity after only a few months. This makes them interesting plants for cultivation in terrariums or (with limitations) as houseplants.
