That is why Cryptanthus are often called “earth stars.” The tough, thick leaves serve as water reservoirs.

C. arelii is actually pure green in the wild, but in cultivation, a spontaneous mutation with bright pink leaf margins appeared in the late 1960s, which was then named 'It'.

When propagating this cultivar, it quickly became apparent that it is unstable, and the offshoots are sometimes green, sometimes pure white, and very rarely have an exactly inverted pattern. These individuals with the inverted pattern were then given an inverted name 'Ti'.

The cultivar ‘Ti’ has white variegation running lengthwise down the center of the leaf and green leaf margins. In bright light, the variegation, which is actually white, takes on a pink hue due to the accumulation of protective pigments, and the green leaf margins turn brownish.

By the way, ‘Ti’ is now stable; it is propagated via tissue culture and thus retains its exact coloration.

After an inflorescence has formed, the mother plant slowly dies off and produces many small offsets that emerge from the sides.

You will receive a plant approximately 15 cm in diameter in a 9 cm pot.
