Despite its considerable mature size of approximately \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com\/photos\/348221470\/original.jpeg\"\u003e5 to 6 meters in height\u003c\/a\u003e (and in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com\/photos\/346582681\/original.jpeg\"\u003eexceptional cases\u003c\/a\u003e even taller), it is still considered an understory plant!\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eAt the top of the trunk, the fern fronds, which can reach up to 3 meters in length, form a light crown. The stems and fronds themselves are densely covered in hairs. These hairs come loose even with the slightest touch.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The trunks of tree ferns actually consist of roots that become woody over time, thus supporting the plant. At the center of the trunk is the relatively thin rhizome, from which the new fronds develop. Therefore, they are not trees in the true sense (just like palms and bananas).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In its natural habitat \u003cem\u003e, Alsophila australis\u003c\/em\u003e is very successful and common. It often forms \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com\/photos\/345484622\/original.jpeg\"\u003eextensive stands\u003c\/a\u003e and is the dominant plant of the undergrowth.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eCyathea\u003c\/em\u003e (or now also \u003cem\u003eAlsophila\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eSphaeropteris\u003c\/em\u003e ) grow much faster than the more well-known hardy tree fern, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.jungle-leaves.de\/produkt\/dicksonia-antarctica-winterharter-baumfarn\/\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDicksonia antarctica\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e . A \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5426625\/\"\u003e2017 study\u003c\/a\u003e measured the growth of both \u003cem\u003eCyathea\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eDicksonia\u003c\/em\u003e in their natural habitat. \u003cem\u003eDicksonia antarctica\u003c\/em\u003e had an annual growth of approximately 33 (± 13) mm, while \u003cem\u003eAlsophila australis\u003c\/em\u003e grew a remarkable 73 (± 22) mm!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In cultivation (i.e., with regular watering and fertilization, and without pests and predators), plants usually grow faster than in the wild. In our experience, the annual growth of \u003cem\u003eD. antarctica\u003c\/em\u003e is about 5 to 8 cm per year, and that of \u003cem\u003eS. cooperi\u003c\/em\u003e is about 10 to 15 cm.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eInterestingly, both species grow faster the taller they are. This means that over time, their growth doesn't slow down, but on the contrary, it gets faster and faster!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e You will receive a young plant in a 12cm pot, approximately 20 to 30cm tall.
