Ecuador is a Gesneriaceae from (who would have guessed) Ecuador. This species, likely undescribed until now, has also been sold as Nautilocalyx erythranthus , which is most likely incorrect. The only similarity this species shares with N. erythranthus is the large, red flowers. The rest of the plant looks completely different. Here you can see very clearly what N. erythranthus actually looks like, and you can immediately recognize that the plant we are offering here is definitely a different one.

Our indeterminate Nautilocalyx grows to about 40 cm tall and has thick, very hairy stems. The leaves are 6 to 9 cm long and 4 to 5 cm wide, rounded, and very bullate (textured like bubble wrap). They are bicolored with a striking gradient from the raised parts, which are light green, to the lower veins, which are dark green to black. The undersides of the leaves are red. The flowers, as mentioned, are bright red and quite large, about 5 cm long and 3 cm wide. They only last a few days.

Of all the Nautilocalyx species in our collection, this one is the most robust. It grows somewhat slower than, for example, Nautilocalyx pemphidius , but tolerates (short-term) drying out much better. We can't say for sure, but we suspect that this species would also thrive as a houseplant in a partially shaded location.

[/expand]

[/porto_content_box]

You will receive a flowering plant approximately 30cm tall in a 9cm pot.
