philodendron-joepii
Philodendron × joepii
This Philodendron is (probably) a natural hybrid of Philodendron bipennifolium and Philodendron pedatum . Both of these species belong to the Schizophyllum section within the genus Philodendron , which is characterized by lobed or split leaves. Based on the shape of the leaves, the hybrid appears to be a cross between these two pinnately lobed plants. Philodendron × joepii has a unique leaf shape that clearly distinguishes it from all other known Philodendrons . The leaves are up to 60 cm long and about 15 to 20 cm wide at their widest point. They have (especially in larger specimens) pronounced auricles, but then a very thin leaf surface that only widens slightly towards the tip. The leaves are leathery and quite robust. Philodendron × joepii grows as a climber, but with rather short internodes and is therefore very compact.

Philodendron × joepii is known only from French Guiana, from the type locality around the Mataroni River. Few plants of this hybrid have been found in the wild, even though both parent species are very common there. Contrary to popular belief, this hybrid has not become rare or particularly threatened in the wild. Rather, successful crossbreeding events are simply infrequent, which is why there are always only a few specimens of this so-called nothospecies, but they do appear periodically. As long as P. bipennifolium and P. pedatum exist in the same habitat, there will always be occasional specimens of Philodendron × joepii .

Philodendron × joepii is named after Joep Moonen, a photographer and naturalist and one of the foremost experts on the Araceae of the Guianas. He discovered these plants in the 1990s and brought them into cultivation.

Philodendron × joepii is extremely easy to care for, likely due to the so-called "hybrid vigor" often observed in plant hybrids. Crossbreeds grow faster, stronger, and are more robust than their parent species. Combined with the unique and rather quirky shape of its leaves, this certainly makes this Philodendron one of the coolest members of the genus, and one that thrives as a houseplant.

You will receive a large, robust plant with leaves over 30cm in size, in a 13cm pot.
