Description
Adiantum raddianum belongs to the maidenhair ferns ( Adiantum ) and originally comes from South and Central America, but is now also widespread as an invasive species in the tropics of Africa and Asia.
The 'Monocolor' cultivar is characterized by particularly dense growth and uniformly light green fronds from tip to base. It also remains somewhat smaller and more compact overall than the standard form.
It grows in damp, shady habitats in the soil, on damp rocks, or even epiphytically on mossy tree trunks. It reaches a height and width of about 20 to 30 cm, with individual fronds reaching a length of 20 cm. The individual leaflets are light green, triangular, and have lobed edges. The very thin, wiry, black leaf stalks are particularly striking, giving it a very delicate, filigree appearance.
Although A. raddianum looks very similar to the native maidenhair fern ( Adiantum capillus-veneris ), it is not winter hardy. Therefore, it should only be kept as a houseplant or terrarium plant!
