Description
Alocasia sp. “Platinum” or “Bisma” is an undescribed Alocasia from the Philippines. “Bisma” is merely a trade name here and is not part of the species name (after all, it does not yet have one). The origin of this species’ name is unknown, but it probably derives from the Javanese male name ‘Bisma’, which means ‘remarkable’.
It is a medium-sized species and resembles Alocasia regina. It grows to a height of about 50 cm. The leaves are up to approx. 30 cm long and 20 cm wide; whilst young leaves are peltate, mature leaves are not. Their base colour is a glossy silver, with slightly darker leaf veins. Overall, the leaves are rounder and thinner than those of the similar Alocasia regina. It also differs markedly from the more commonly available Alocasia baginda “Silver Dragon”, due to its more uniform silver colouring. The petioles are light green with red speckles.
The flowers are white with red speckles and usually appear in groups of three or four in succession.
You will receive an almost fully grown plant, 20 to 30 cm tall, in a 12 cm pot.
