Description
This beautiful Alocasia was described in 2007 and originates from northern Borneo.
There, it grows in depressions and valley bottoms in humid to perpetually humid lowland rainforests on deeply litter-covered sandstone-loam soils in deep shade. It reaches a height of about 50 cm and a width of about 30 cm. In mature plants, the leaves are held upright, making them appear somewhat narrower than in young plants. About 20 cm of the height is accounted for by the petioles and 25 to 30 cm by the leaves. It usually bears only a few leaves (up to 12) at a time.
The color of the leaves is unique and special. They are perhaps most reminiscent of Alocasia cuprea, but their metallic color is significantly darker and appears "oily." Depending on the viewing angle, the leaves are glossy dark green to bluish or purple. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to capture in pictures. Incidentally, it is not truly "black" as it is depicted in many pictures. It has a dark green base tone. The undersides of the leaves are wine red.
The inflorescence is greenish-white.
A truly beautiful species that creates an almost otherworldly look in a shaded location in a rainforest terrarium. We expressly recommend this species only as a terrarium plant! It is not particularly adaptable to environmental conditions that do not match those in its habitat.
You will receive a young plant of approximately 20 cm height in a 10.5 cm pot.
