Description
Alocasia longiloba is native to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
In the wild, it exhibits considerable variation in leaf shape and pattern. The ‘Watsoniana’ form, which is sometimes described as a separate species but not recognized as such, likely originates from Sumatra. It has more rounded, matte, velvety leaves instead of the typical elongated, glossy leaves of the standard A. longiloba.
In the wild, ‘Watsoniana’ is usually found growing on rocks, while other forms of A. longiloba are also frequently found growing terrestrially.
It grows to an impressive size, with leaves over 60 cm long and 30 cm wide. It resembles Alocasia suhirmaniana, but remains somewhat smaller and is also significantly easier to care for (it does not undergo a long dormant period after flowering and is generally more robust). Especially in very large specimens, the leaf pattern is also slightly different from that of A. suhirmaniana. In mature specimens of A. longiloba ‘Watsoniana’, the white leaf veins branch dichotomously before reaching the leaf margin, whereas this does not happen in A. suhirmaniana. However, the species are primarily distinguished by the characteristics of their flowers. Those interested can find information on the relevant differences here in the “Taxonomic Notes” field. From the underside, the leaves are deep red to purple. Like most hard-leaved Alocasia, each plant bears only a few leaves at a time.
Although it remains somewhat smaller than A. suhirmaniana, it still grows significantly larger than the similar-looking and very popular Alocasia ‘Amazonica’ (a hybrid of A. longiloba ‘Watsonia’ and A. sanderiana). A mature Alocasia longiloba ‘Watsoniana’ is a true showpiece in any plant collection.
You’ll receive a vigorous young plant, approximately 20 cm tall, in an 8 cm pot.
