Description
Alocasia longiloba originates from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
In nature, it is quite variable in its leaf shape and markings. The 'Watsoniana' form, sometimes described as a separate species but not recognized as such, comes from Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula. It has rounder and glossier leaves instead of the typical, elongated leaves of the standard A. longiloba.
It grows impressively large, with leaves over 60 cm long and 30 cm wide. It resembles Alocasia suhirmaniana, but remains somewhat smaller and is also significantly easier to care for (it does not undergo long dormancy periods after flowering and is generally more robust). Especially in very large specimens, the leaf pattern is also slightly different from A. suhirmaniana. In mature specimens of A. longiloba 'Watsoniana', the white leaf veins dichotomously branch before the leaf margin, which they do not do in A. suhirmaniana. However, the species are mainly distinguished by characteristics of their flowers. Those interested can find information about the relevant differences here in the "Taxonomic Notes" field.
Although it remains somewhat smaller than A. suhirmaniana, it still grows significantly larger than the similarly looking and very popular Alocasia ‘Polly’. A mature Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana' is a true showpiece in any plant collection.
You will receive a strong plant, approx. 40 to 50 cm high in an 11 cm pot.
