Description
Alocasia micholitziana originates from the Philippines, where it is found on the island of Luzon and its surrounding smaller islands.
The form offered here has contrastingly variegated leaves with sharply defined white areas.
Alocasia micholitziana grows in rainforests, often in clearings and along paths at an altitude of approximately 1200 -1500 m. This species is common and widespread and likely occurs over a wider altitude range than the few available locality data suggest.
It is a large species, growing up to about 1.50 m tall, but usually remains smaller. The leaves can grow up to about 60 cm long and 30 cm wide. Typically, however, it only reaches about 50 to 60 cm in height, with leaves approximately 40x20 cm in size. Like most Alocasia, it carries only a few leaves at a time, about 4 to 7. The fresh leaves are light green, becoming progressively darker over time. In a shady location, the leaves become velvety black, making the white veins stand out extremely prominently. One of the most beautiful Alocasias. The leaves also feel velvety!
The inflorescences have a white spathe and usually appear singly in cultivation, though up to 4 inflorescences simultaneously are possible in larger specimens.
The species is quite variable in nature, and there are several cultivated forms of it, all looking slightly different.
The most well-known (and perhaps also most beautiful) form today is a rather small form with comparatively broad and very dark, almost black leaves and white veins. This form, which has been cultivated since the 1980s, is correctly named 'Green Velvet'.
The epithet 'Frydek', actually a misspelling of 'Freydyk', refers to a gold-variegated cultivar that emerged from 'Green Velvet', but is now used for all variegated forms of A. micholitziana 'Green Velvet', including the white-variegated form offered here.
