Description
Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' (which we, too, long mistakenly sold as a form of A. sarawakensis) is a large Alocasia of unknown origin. The well-known Alocasia breeder Brian Williams brought it into cultivation but couldn't find out anything more about its origin. It is believed to be a hybrid with or mutation of Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Plumbea'.
Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' remains somewhat smaller than typical A. macrorrhizos cultivars, growing "only" up to about 2 m tall and has highly glossy, very dark green leaves on the upper side. The underside of the leaves is also beautiful with its metallic steel-gray shimmer, interwoven with red leaf veins. The petioles of 'Yucatan Princess' are for the most part deep black, with a green pattern on the inside. One of the most spectacular Alocasias and one of our absolute favorites. As a houseplant, it is not yet widely distributed.
