Description
Anchomanes difformis is an arum lily from tropical West Africa. It belongs to the Nephthytideae, a group of aroids that are very rare in cultivation. They grow slowly and are characterized by an appearance similar to many Amorphophallus .
Anchomanes difformis has a tuber, which is underground in young plants but partially exposed in older ones. These tubers can become enormous, lying horizontally and measuring 50–80 cm in length and 10–20 cm in diameter. The leaves of mature plants grow on spiny petioles up to 2 meters tall and are umbrella-shaped, reaching a diameter of approximately 1 meter.
Unlike Amorphophallus , A. difformis can bear several leaves simultaneously, especially older plants. It does not exhibit a distinct division into dormancy and growth periods. However, in our climate, these plants tend to enter a dormant period during the winter, during which they should be kept dry.
The inflorescence also stands on a very prickly stem and is enclosed by a dark red bract.
You will receive a strong plant, approximately 20 to 40cm tall in a 9cm pot. These young plants are just getting their first leaves with the typical, spiky stems!
