Description
Aphelandra squarrosa , the glossy acanthus (sometimes also called the zebra plant), is an acanthaceae (Acanthaceae) from the so-called "Atlantic Forest" on the east coast of Brazil. Many of the popular houseplants ( Calathea , Ctenanthe , Maranta ) originate from this same habitat. Accordingly, the care of A. squarrosa is very similar.
A. squarrosa grows to about 60 cm tall and flowers at around this height (sometimes slightly less) with a 10-15 cm long, bright yellow flower stalk. The flowers themselves are elongated and also yellow. It is very attractive even outside of its flowering period. The leaves, which can reach up to 20 cm in length, are surprisingly tough and dark green with very contrasting, pure white veins. The sturdy stems are red.
It is suitable both as a houseplant for shadier (but not dark!) corners and as a terrarium plant for larger terrariums.
You will receive a plant approximately 20 cm tall with several shoots in a 12 cm pot.
Attention: Due to the season, the plants are currently a bit smaller, but are in full bloom!
