Description
Anyone who has ever seen a 50 kg jackfruit on a tree in the tropics is unlikely to forget it anytime soon.
The fruit clusters grow to an enormous size and taste exceptionally good. Due to the weight of the fruit, they must form directly on the trunk of the tree (cauliflory). This is also known, for example, from cocoa pods.
Nor should one forget the milky sap, which is very difficult to wash off and can ooze from any wound.
Apart from that, the jackfruit tree is also an attractive potted plant that can be kept smaller by pruning.
Originally from India, jackfruit is now cultivated in all tropical countries.
The jackfruit tree belongs to the Moraceae family within the rose family.
