Begonia bogneri is a miniature begonia found only in a very small area within Masoala National Park on the Masoala Peninsula in northern Madagascar. The habitat where this species is found is less than one hectare (10,000 m²). It was described in 1969 and named after its discoverer, Josef Bogner, the head of the greenhouse facilities at the Munich Botanical Garden.
Masoala National Park protects the largest and one of the last remaining contiguous rainforests in Madagascar and is only accessible by a boat trip lasting several hours. There are no roads in or through the park. The park is also one of the wettest areas in Madagascar. During the rainy season, the park is therefore almost inaccessible. Even during the short dry season, there is still a significant amount of rainfall. These two factors certainly make Begonia bogneri one of the rarest plants in our collection.
In nature, it grows lithophytically (on stones) or in moss cushions in and around the park's numerous small streams. Its leaves are very narrow and appear grass-like at first glance. However, they are surprisingly thick and almost round, more like small poles than grass, and therefore unfortunately break easily. They reach a maximum length of about 15 cm, but usually remain smaller at only about 8 to 10 cm. It grows from a compact rhizome. Its flowers are also tiny and pale pink.
It belongs to the Erminea section.
