Begonia chloroneura originates from the island of Luzon, which belongs to the Philippines. It appears to be extremely rare in the wild. To date, it has only been collected once, in 1987 by J. Atwood at Dalton Pass. This mountain pass lies at an altitude of approximately 900 meters and is known for an endemic orchid species found only there, Ceratocentron fesselii .
Since Begonia chloroneura has also never been found at other locations, it appears to be endemic there as well, with an extremely small distribution area. Dalton Pass has not yet been designated a nature reserve to protect endemic species like Begonia chloroneura or Ceratocentron fesselii , so extinction in the wild is a threat.
The climate there is tropical and very humid, with only a short dry season. Due to the elevated location, temperatures are somewhat milder than in the lowlands. Begonia chloroneura grows there on loamy slopes or in crevices in vertical limestone cliffs, which are often overgrown with moss. It has a creeping, prostrate rhizome from which its leaves grow at short intervals on very long petioles.
The leaves, which grow to about 20 cm in length, are very dark red to black. Only the veins are light green, creating a striking contrast. Additionally, the leaves and petioles are covered with numerous short, red hairs. The pink flowers are borne on stems up to 60 cm long.
It can bloom even as a very small plant with leaves only about 5 cm in size.
Within the begonias, it belongs to the section Baryandra .
