Begonia chlorosticta ' Dark Form ' is also known by two other names: Begonia chlorosticta ' Red ' and Begonia chlorosticta ' Black '. All three names refer to the same plant and make sense, as the new leaves are initially red, and the dark areas gradually turn black (more brownish in young plants with thin leaves). There is also a green form, or "Green Form," of B. chlorosticta . This form has light green spots on a dark green background and thus corresponds to the original description of this species. Therefore, it is rumored that the Dark Form will soon be described as a separate species with a new name.
Begonia chlorosticta 'Dark Form' originates from the Hose Mountains in central Sarawak, Borneo. This mountain range is particularly known for its remoteness and the pristine condition of its rainforests. It likely grows primarily in the lowlands (below 1500m above sea level) in the shady undergrowth of the rainforests.
It grows semi-creeping, semi-upright with stems up to 80 cm tall, which can become woody over time. However, it usually doesn't reach this size in cultivation. The leaves grow to about 20 cm long and 15 cm wide and are among the most spectacular of all begonias. The young leaves are red and rather translucent, but in mature plants, the base color is velvety black (and no, that's not a camera trick!) with sharply defined, light green, round spots. A narrow, also light green, border completes the leaf. In low light, the black parts can develop a slight blue iridescence. The underside of the leaves is deep red.
Begonia chlorosticta has separate male and female inflorescences. The male inflorescences have 10 to 30 small, yellow/pink individual flowers. The female inflorescences almost always produce exactly 2 flowers. The female flowers are significantly larger, bright red, and drooping.
It is considered a difficult species to cultivate. However, we find it to be relatively robust. More information can be found in the "Care" tab.
It belongs to the Petermannia section.
