Description
Begonia cleopatrae originates from the Philippine island of Palawan and is found there only on a single, remote mountain, the "Needle of Cleopatra" (Mt. Cleopatra's Needle) at an altitude of approximately 400 m, after which it is named.
The ascent of Mt. Cleopatra's Needle is described as a "challenging trek for serious mountaineers" and takes 3-4 days. The route involves numerous river crossings, traversing boulders, and passing through one of the most biodiverse forests in the Philippines. Begonia cleopatrae was only described as a new species in 2010.
Its leaves are rounded, hairless, and distinctly thickened, almost succulent. The upper surface of the leaves is pale green with a characteristic black marking that always leaves a continuous, vertical line across the center. The underside of the leaves is pale red. It has strikingly long, also red, petioles. It grows flat against vertical rocks, the leaves pressing themselves tightly against the rock. Its rhizome is remarkably long, suggesting a creeping habit compared to the shorter rhizomes of most other species in its section. When cultivated in a pot, however, it has a more compact growth habit. It can be kept in a terrarium or indoors and, despite its rarity, is not particularly demanding.
The flowers of B. cleopatrae are especially beautiful when unopened. The flower buds and stems are bright red and then turn pink after opening.
It is assigned to the section Diploclinium within the genus Begonia .
You will receive a strong plant in a 5cm pot.
