This small begonia grows naturally on damp stones (lithophytic) or tree trunks (epiphytic) and has strikingly thickened, succulent leaves. It therefore tolerates short periods of drought well and is also less sensitive to low humidity than many other tropical begonias. In nature, most populations have purely green leaves, but a few specimens display a striking red "eyespot" above the base of the leaf stalk, giving them a wonderful contrast and an unusual coloration.
The leaf stalks and creeping rhizome are covered with orange to brown hairs. This species grows rather flat and compact and requires more light than other begonias. However, it still grows relatively slowly.
It blooms with white to light pink flowers.
It belongs to the Gireoudia section.
