Description
Begonia mabberleyana is a small, cane-type begonia, only described in 2019, from a very small distribution area in eastern Sulawesi (Central Sulawesi Province). It is known from only two locations, which are threatened by overexploitation and deforestation. Therefore, it has been provisionally classified as "critically endangered" according to IUCN criteria.
B. mabberleyana grows to about 80 cm tall/long, but usually remains considerably shorter, and has dark green, highly glossy leaves with an unusual shape that appears cut off. It blooms with white to pale pink flowers.
In nature, it grows on limestone slopes in the shady undergrowth of the rainforest.
With its interesting growth habit and the unusual shape and color of its leaves for begonias, it is a beautiful addition to the tropical terrarium.
