Description
Begonia masoniana originates from northern Vietnam and southern China (Guangxi province) where it grows on shady earth or rocky slopes.
Begonia masoniana has a creeping, above-ground rhizome from which leaves grow at short intervals on long, very hairy stems. In the cultivar 'Mountain', the leaves grow very large, up to about 30 cm, and are strongly bullate, meaning they are covered with numerous small, pointed bumps. A single hair sits atop each bump. Both the leaf margins and broad areas around the main veins are a striking dark red. This marking also distinguishes 'Mountain' from other Begonia masoniana cultivars, which lack this dark leaf margin.
The very similar Begonia variegata is often confused with Begonia masoniana, but they can be easily distinguished by the hairs on their leaves. In Begonia variegata, the hairs are pink to red and very dense, while in B. masoniana they are rather sparse and transparent. The dark markings on the leaves of B. variegata are dark red, very bold, and broad, while in B. masoniana they are somewhat fainter, black to brown, and significantly narrower. The two species also differ in the details of their flowers.
The flowers of B. masoniana are greenish-white and rather small.
It is assigned to the section Coelocentrum within the genus Begonia .
You will receive a robust plant in a 12cm pot. This species has large, brittle leaves. Minor damage during shipping is unfortunately unavoidable.
