Begonia cf. negrosensis is a small stem-forming ("cane type") begonia from the Philippine island of Negros.
It is endemic to this island and is named after it. There, it grows in the shady undergrowth of premontane rainforests at altitudes of 600 to 1600m.
The "cf." in the name stands for the Latin " confer" (meaning: compare!) and is used when there is uncertainty in the identification of a species. This is the case here, because although this species is traded as *B. negrosensis* and we also sell it under this name, some of its characteristics do not match the "true" *B. negrosensis* . In herbarium specimens, this species is described as a bush up to 3 m tall with 2.5 cm thick stems and uniformly green leaves! This is obviously quite different from the plants we offer here as *B. cf. negrosensis* .
Nevertheless, the identification isn't entirely unfounded, as young *B. negrosensis* do indeed look similar to our plants here. They likely lose these spots once they reach a certain size. However, the plants sold commercially as *B. negrosensis * never reach this size and (usually) retain their spots. Whether this is a new species or perhaps a dwarf form of the true * B. negrosensis* is not definitively established. For this reason, we sell these plants as *Begonia cf. negrosensis *.
The thin stems of these plants only grow to about 30 cm tall without support. If they grow longer, they bend sideways under their own weight and eventually either touch the ground or break off. We recommend pruning the stems back before this happens.
The olive to dark green leaves are velvety, matte, and strikingly wavy, giving them a very three-dimensional appearance. Their most noticeable feature is, of course, the bright pink spots, which seem to glow. On closer inspection, the spots even glitter in the light, as if made of metallic paint. The leaves usually only grow to about 6 to 8 cm long and 4 cm wide. Young leaves are olive green and darken over time. Begonia cf. negrosensis looks a bit like a pink miniature version of the popular trout begonia ( Begonia maculata ). Older Begonia cf. negrosensis plants tend to have slightly fewer spots. However, these can simply be cut back and allowed to sprout new growth. The new growth will then again be brightly patterned in pink.
Begonia cf. negrosensis blooms with salmon-colored to pink flowers from a height of about 30 cm.
Begonia cf. negrosensis belongs to the section Petermannia .
