Begonia vankerckhovenii is a miniature begonia from the mountain forests of West Africa, where it grows at altitudes of 600 to 800m in temperate rainforests.
In nature, it grows epiphytically (on trees) or lithophytically (on rocks) in moss cushions that cover the ground and the trunks and branches of trees in mountain forests. The leaves are pointed, peltate, and have a fringe of a few hairs along the leaf margin. The leaf margin is usually light red or orange. The petioles are also orange to red and slightly hairy. The leaves remain small, only about 2 to 3 cm long. It grows very compactly and forms tiny, dense clumps.
It blooms very profusely and for a long time with small, yellow and orange flowers. In a terrarium, it can bloom practically continuously, creating a wonderful splash of color.
It belongs to the Scutobegonia section.
