Begonia versicolor is a small, very compact begonia from the mountains of southern Yunnan Province, China. It grows lithophytically on rocks in forests, in moist environments on slopes or along riverbanks at altitudes of 1800 to 2100 meters. It typically reaches a height of no more than 5 cm (excluding flower stalks) and grows very slowly. All parts of the plant are densely covered with pink to fuchsia hairs. The round leaves grow to about 6 to 9 cm in length and lie very flat against the ground. They are covered with numerous small bumps, each tipped with a longer hair.
Begonia versicolor exhibits extreme variation in its leaf pattern, with almost entirely red, green, and variously patterned specimens. The form we offer here is one of the most colorful! It has a light green base color with dark red to brown veins, white spots between the veins, and bright red hairs.
The flowers are relatively small and range in color from pink to white.
It belongs to the Platycentrum section.
