Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis'

Bolbitis heteroclita is a terrestrial fern that is very widespread in Southeast Asia and can actually grow quite large. However, it is mainly offered in our region in the tiny 'difformis' form as an aquarium plant. This dwarf form originally comes from the Philippine island of Negros and was only recently described as a separate species ( Edanyoa difformis ). 'Difformis' rarely grows taller than 5 cm and forms a very dense mat.

Cultivating this plant as a submerged (i.e., completely submerged) specimen is rather difficult. It grows better in very moist locations that are not underwater. It is ideally suited, for example, for stream banks and shoreline areas in paludariums.

Only when grown emersed (i.e., on land) does it eventually develop sporophylls. These are about 10 cm high and bear dense clusters of sporangia at their ends.
