Description
Bolbitis × sinuosa is a natural hybrid, probably from Bolbitis quoyana and Bolbitis rhizophylla . In most botanical databases, it is listed as a separate species rather than a hybrid. Its taxonomy is not yet definitively settled. We follow Hennipman (1977), who lists it as a natural hybrid. (Not to be confused with Bolbitis sinuata , a different species!)
The form sold here is probably Bolbitis × sinuosa f. foxii , which is also sold under the names 'Dwarf' or 'Tiger Stripe'. It was formerly considered a separate species, Bolbitis foxii .
It originates from Central Polillo, an island in the Philippines. There, it grows along riverbanks on rocks. As the trade name 'Dwarf' suggests, this form remains particularly small. It appears not to form sporophylls, but only juvenile leaves that do not divide into pinnae, remaining simple, elongated fronds. These grow to about 10 to 15 cm long and have a wavy to serrated edge and a striking striped pattern with dark veins, hence the alternative trade name 'Tiger Stripe'. It grows with a creeping rhizome from which the upright fronds alternate.
Since it does not form sporophylls, it can only be propagated vegetatively. Because it appears to have been collected from the wild only a few times (the last time probably in the early 1970s), this means that likely all cultivated specimens originate from this original plant.
You will receive a young plant in a 6 cm pot. These young plants usually do not yet have the typical leaf pattern. This only appears when the leaves are somewhat larger.
