Description
Calathea fasciata , which according to current taxonomy is actually Goeppertia fasciata , originates from Brazil. "Fasciata" means striped/banded. Its very small distribution area is north of the city of Itabuna in the state of Bahia. There, it grows in the forest in shady areas of the undergrowth, emerging from an underground rhizome that serves as a water and nutrient reservoir. It reaches a height of about 70 cm. The round leaves, with alternating light and dark stripes, from which it gets its name, are among the larger ones within the arrowroot family (Marantaceae). They can grow to 30 cm long and 25 cm wide, and in exceptional cases and under very favorable conditions, even larger!
Arrowroot plants are also called "prayer plants" in English because of the way their leaves move; at night, they fold them upwards like hands in prayer. Generally, the leaves of Marantaceae move relatively quickly and frequently, so these movements (which almost all plants exhibit) are much more noticeable in Marantaceae. This makes them appear truly alive!
You will receive a strong plant in a 14cm pot. The leaves may have slight damage (see image gallery).
