Cynometra cauliflora (Nam-Nam)

The "Nam-Nam" (also spelled Namnam) is a member of the legume family (Fabaceae) native to Malaysia and Indonesia. In its natural habitat, it grows as a tree or shrub up to 15 meters tall, but in cultivation it remains significantly smaller (around 5 meters). The new growth, which appears simultaneously on all branches, is particularly beautiful. The leaves are initially red and drooping. They then turn a vibrant orange and stand upright before finally becoming green.

It is cauliflorous, meaning the flowers (and later the fruits) appear directly on the trunk, not on the branches. In this respect, it resembles, for example, cacao , to which it is not closely related.

The fruits are pods, which grow to about 10 cm long and 5 cm wide. The pod is not easily broken open, but a line is visible along its length, dividing it into two parts. The color of the ripe pod is pale greenish-yellow to brown. It has aromatic and juicy yellow flesh and relatively large seeds. They are also used to make compote.
