Hoffmannia ghiesbreghtii belongs to the Rubiaceae family and originates from southern Mexico and Central America. It grows to a maximum height of about 3 meters, but usually remains smaller. Its leaves reach a length of 50 cm, in rare cases up to 80 cm, and are oblong with a velvety surface.
The leaf veins are very striking, arranged in a very regular pattern and deeply sunken, giving the leaf a bullate, ribbed appearance. The upper surface of the leaves is velvety and dark, with colors ranging from reddish to dark brown depending on the light. The veins are highlighted in a light color. The underside of the leaves is red. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, whitish to pink, and appear in panicles of 5 to 20 individual flowers.
Unlike Hoffmannia discolor, it grows upright and develops woody stems with age. However, the care and requirements are very similar for both species.
