Hygroryza aristata (floating rice)

Floating rice ( Hygroryza aristata ) is a floating plant from the grass family (Poaceae) and should not be confused with the water rice species (genus Zizania ). Despite what their names might suggest, neither genus is true rice from the genus Oryza , although floating rice is at least more closely related to it.

This floating plant grows both freely in the water and firmly rooted in pots. In either case, the 50-150 cm long, hollow shoots float on the water's surface, extending their leaves and shoot tips above it. This allows them to form dense, so-called "flood lawns" in the tropics of Southeast Asia. The leaves are attractively striped light green, and the leaf stalks are inflated and filled with air, which gives the floating rice its buoyancy.
