Description
Leucocasia gigantea, the "giant elephant ear," formerly known as Colocasia gigantea, is a truly gigantic representative of the Araceae family.
Various cultivated forms of L. gigantea exist. The one sold here is the true 'Thailand Giant,' which grows significantly larger than the standard form and produces significantly fewer offshoots, instead investing all its energy into the growth of the main plant. And it's quite impressive! Up to about 3 m tall, 4 m wide, with individual leaves over 2 meters long and wide. In nature, L. gigantea grows in seasonally dry tropical forests, in monsoon regions of Southeast Asia. It blooms with surprisingly small, white flowers that have a pleasant fruity scent.
Do you ever buy plants that you know will get too big and think, "that's a problem for future me"? Then this is the perfect plant for you!
Except that future will arrive surprisingly fast. Because not only is the size of this plant breathtaking, but so is its growth rate. With good care, the small plants we offer here can already reach almost 2 m in height this year, with 1.50 m long leaves. They will then reach their full size in the 2nd or 3rd year...
Fortunately for all of us who don't have a large greenhouse, L. gigantea can also be kept smaller, cared for outdoors in summer, and overwintered in a space-saving manner. See the "Care" tab for more information.
You will receive a strong plant in a 9cm pot, approx. 20 to 30cm tall. The plants show minor imperfections on the leaves.
Unfortunately, the very wet and cool summer has left its mark here too. However, the plants are also significantly larger than in the old preview picture!
