Description
The gooseberry tree ( Phyllanthus acidus ) is a fruit tree that has long been cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. Because it has been cultivated for so long, its exact origin is unclear. It is believed that it originally came from Madagascar and was widely spread by humans in prehistoric times.
The fruits are about 3 cm in size, yellow when ripe, and taste sour. They are very rich in vitamin C and are eaten raw (sweetened) or often pickled or preserved. The juice is a popular refreshing drink. Although the plant can grow up to 10 meters tall, it can bear fruit even as a small plant. The first fruits can be expected when the trunk reaches about 1 meter in height. In a tropical climate, it flowers and fruits twice a year.
Besides its delicious fruit , Phyllanthus acidus also boasts a truly attractive appearance. Its long leaves are pinnate and, like many Phyllanthus species , fold downwards at night or when water is scarce. Young plants, especially those that haven't yet branched, resemble small palm trees.
You will receive a young plant approximately 10 to 20cm tall in a 7cm pot.
