Description
This piper originates from Borneo and the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. It grows in the shady undergrowth of rainforests.
It is distinguished by its soft, velvety leaves with pink to white markings. The markings are particularly deep pink on fresh leaves and younger plants. This is also reflected in its name: " porphyra " means purple. The undersides of the leaves are dark red.
Unlike other Piper species, this marking remains even in large plants and is not only present during the creeping juvenile stage. It grows rather slowly, and like most Piper species , this one prefers to climb. The leaves are noticeably soft and thin. Therefore, in our opinion, this species is not suitable as a houseplant. It should only be kept in a terrarium, as it requires high humidity.
With proper care, this species also forms numerous so-called "protein bodies" on the undersides of its leaves.
You will receive a young plant in a 9 cm square pot.
