Description
Platycerium alcicorne originates from eastern tropical Africa and Madagascar. Plants from mainland Africa and Madagascar differ.
The African form is known for its green, smooth mantle leaves with sparse hairs on the fronds. In contrast, the Madagascan form has folds at the tips of its mantle leaves, and its fronds are usually covered in white hairs.
The plants offered here belong to the rarer Madagascan variety and are a particularly small selection, in which the fronds curl at the tips. They only grow to about 40 cm tall and 30 cm wide and have upright, very narrow fronds.
Platycerium alcicorne 'Dwarf' grows relatively slowly and is not difficult to care for.
It grows best when mounted or attached sideways to a substrate such as cork. There, it can develop its characteristic antler shape. This species should not be kept too moist and requires plenty of light to thrive. Water carefully in a terrarium. Excessive moisture and overwatering can quickly cause this plant to rot!
This species has a pronounced dry season during which it does not produce new fronds and the outer leaves die back to conserve water. This should be taken into account when caring for it.
You will receive a strong, young orchid plant in a 9 cm pot. Some plants already have their first outer leaves. Well-hardened and robust, no spore-forming plants!
