Description
Plumeria , better known as frangipani, belong to the dogbane family (Apocynaceae) and originate from the tropics of the Caribbean and South and Central America.
In nature, they grow into quite large trees or shrubs, but in indoor cultivation, they are kept compact through pruning. They grow rather slowly and have very robust, leathery, obovate leaves that can reach about 20 to 30 cm in length and 15 cm in width. All parts of the plant exude a milky sap when damaged, which can irritate the skin.
The main attraction of frangipani is, of course, its blossoms. Depending on the variety, they are white, yellow, red, pink, or a combination of these colors. The five petals are arranged symmetrically and always twist clockwise. Flowers are usually formed in small groups of 5 to 15 individual blooms. The flowers are not only beautiful to look at but also have a wonderfully fruity fragrance. However, they usually only release their scent at night, as they primarily attract nocturnal hawk moths (Sphingidae).
