Description
Psychotria are small trees or woody shrubs belonging to the Rubiaceae family, which also includes coffee. Psychotria viridis , the green psychotria , originates from South America and is particularly common along the Andes. Its leaves are ovate to oblong with attractive, wavy margins and sunken veins. The flowers are greenish-white, and the ripe berries are red. As the name suggests, it contains psychoactive alkaloids. It is one of the two main ingredients of ayahuasca. The other main ingredient is Banisteriopsis caapii .
