Description
Rhizophora mangle , also known as red mangrove, can be used in freshwater, brackish, and saltwater aquariums. In these environments, it contributes to nitrate reduction, for example. It is also ideally suited as a potted plant. The genus name Rhizophora means "root-bearer" and refers to its characteristic stilt roots.
The visible part of the young plants often sold as seeds is actually the hypocotyl of the seedling, which germinates in the fruit on the mother plant (vivipary) and then enters a dormant phase until suitable environmental conditions stimulate the sprouting of the roots and leaves.
The red mangrove is a true pioneer species of coastal marine and brackish water areas in the warm tropics worldwide. Its original distribution area is Central and South America (the Caribbean) and parts of West Africa. There, it forms the basis of an entire ecosystem. The fine sediments trapped in the dense root system create an anoxic mud and provide a habitat for permanent residents such as fiddler crabs and mudskippers. In this way, it protects marine reefs from the influx of freshwater sediments and nutrients, and its impenetrable root labyrinth serves as a nursery for a multitude of reef fish.
Our mangroves come from a sustainable source and support the association "Mangrow'", which is committed to the preservation and reforestation of Caribbean mangrove forests.
