Description
Saintpaulia , better known as African violets, come from the Usambara Mountains in northern Tanzania. These mountains are home to a unique ecosystem with one of the oldest rainforests on Earth. Many of the animal and plant species found there are endemic.
African violets (Gesneriaceae) are not closely related to violets ( Viola ), although their flowers look quite similar. The leaves of African violets are oval, fleshy, and velvety. They grow in a compact rosette approximately 10 to 20 cm in diameter. They remain more compact in brighter light. In nature, they often grow lithophytically, meaning directly on rocks. Therefore, despite their origin in a tropical rainforest, they are also adapted to dry conditions!
The cultivar 'Hovariagata' was introduced in 2022 by the Dutch nursery Hofstede Hovaria and is one of very few African violet varieties with variegated leaves. In this variety, the leaf margins are more or less broadly white. With more light, the proportion of white increases, and the leaves can become up to 80% white, leaving only the center of the leaf green. The flowers of this variety are pink and double. It blooms profusely.
When grown with sufficient light, this plant, with its symmetrical, compact growth, patterned leaves and pink flowers, is a real eye-catcher.
You will receive a flowering plant approximately 10 to 12cm in diameter in a 9cm pot.
