Description
Sauromatum venosum , also known as lizard arum or voodoo lily, is one of the commonly offered tuberous arum plants and is also widespread in nature, where it originally occurs from western India to southern China. However, it is now common from tropical Africa and throughout Southeast Asia. There, it prefers to grow in rainforests, disturbed areas, and along rivers.
The tuber typically produces 2-3 foot-shaped leaves successively per growing season, which can reach a considerable size. Once the tuber weighs approximately 100 g, an inflorescence may develop in early spring (January-March), emitting a strong carrion-like odor for about 3 days. The wild form has a deep, dark red, spotted spathe. A variety from Ethiopia ( Sauromatum venosum 'Lake Tana' ), only known for a few years, has a spathe with a high proportion of yellow.
