Selenicereus grandiflorus (True Queen of the Night)

This tropical leaf cactus from southern Mexico and the Caribbean probably has the largest flowers of all leaf cacti (up to 30 cm in diameter!). The outer bracts of the flower are yellowish to orange, the inner petals pure white. In nature, this cactus grows epiphytically, meaning on and around trees, but primarily in dry regions with a pronounced dry season, which it easily survives.

The shoots are round, covered with short spines, and can reach a length of up to 5 meters! The gigantic flowers only open for a short time (often just a day or a night) and are said to have a pleasant vanilla fragrance. It is therefore sometimes called the "vanilla cactus." The flowers are particularly attractive to bats.
