Averrhoa carambola (star fruit, carambola)

The star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) belongs to the wood sorrel family (Oxalidaceae) and originally comes from the Moluccas Islands (Indonesia), but is now cultivated throughout the tropics. It owes its name to its star-shaped, yellow fruits when viewed in cross-section.

In nature, the star fruit tree can grow up to 15 meters tall, but usually remains considerably smaller (around 5 to 7 meters). It bears fruit even as a small tree from about 2 meters in height and can be kept small through regular pruning. The plant itself, with its delicate, feathery leaves, is also quite attractive and well-suited for use as a bonsai!

Star fruit comes in many different varieties, from rather sour to sweet. They contain plenty of vitamins A and C, as well as iron and calcium.

The variety offered here is rather sweet when ripe and very refreshing. Perfect raw, in summer drinks, or as an addition to salads!



You will receive a young plant at least 15 cm tall in a 7cm square pot.

Please note: Averrhoa plants are extremely sensitive to shipping. Therefore, a shipping surcharge is included in the German purchase price, and the plants are shipped via UPS Express Saver. Drooping leaves after shipping are still normal. The plants should recover from the stress of shipping as quickly as possible if provided with suitable conditions.
