Description
Racinaea dyeriana (better known as Tillandsia dyeriana , although this has been incorrect for some time) originates from northwestern Ecuador. It is rare in the wild and inhabits a variety of habitats. It can be found both in the humid, rather cool cloud forest and on the branches of red mangroves in hot mangrove swamps along the coast.
This species is quite small, growing to about 15 to 20 cm tall. It forms a tight rosette with a watertight funnel in its center. The leaf bases are spotted with black. Its large inflorescence is particularly striking and beautiful. The bracts of the inflorescence are bright red or orange, so vibrant they seem to glow. The white, tubular flowers appear gradually from the base of the inflorescence to the tip. Each individual flower remains open for only about a day. The bracts fade somewhat after their flowers have finished blooming.
The entire inflorescence is drooping and strongly resembles the (unrelated) Heliconia rostrata .
A truly beautiful and surprisingly easy-to-care-for species.
You will receive a flowering plant in a 5 cm round pot.
