Description
This tiny Tillandsia occurs naturally from the southern United States to Chile.
It is tiny but grows in large, interconnected colonies on trees and shrubs. These clumps can reach considerable sizes over time and even hang down to the ground. Its growth form is reminiscent of mosses (hence the common name) or beard lichens of the genus Usnea , to which the species name also refers. Its flowers are brown or yellow and rather small and inconspicuous.
Within its large distribution area, there are many different forms or ecotypes. These are populations adapted to their local conditions. The form known as 'Fine', for example, consists of particularly small, thin individual plants that grow loosely and therefore dry much faster. It occurs in very humid cloud forests on tropical mountains. The form known as 'Curly' consists of much larger individual plants that are twisted and interlocked, forming very dense clumps that retain moisture for much longer. It occurs in arid regions.
Contrary to popular belief, humidity or fog alone is not enough for T. usneoides to survive long-term. In nature, it also relies on regular rainfall to obtain sufficient water.
We offer four different forms here. You can find a more detailed description of each form by clicking on the individual buttons.
