Triolena pustulata is a small, round-lipped coral (Melastomataceae) from Ecuador. It grows terrestrially or epiphytically in shady, permanently moist locations in the soil or on mossy tree trunks. In a terrarium, Triolena pustulata will root on any permanently moist surface (e.g., stones, background walls). It branches moderately and thus forms a small stand over time. It reaches a height of about 20 to 30 cm.
The leaves are approximately 6 to 10 cm long and 4 to 5 cm wide. They exhibit the venation typical of melastomataceae: three, five, or at most seven arching main veins running from the leaf base to the tip, with lateral veins branching off at right angles. Rectangles are formed between the main and lateral veins. In Triolena pustulata , these rectangles are curved upwards, forming small "bumps." A red hair sits atop each bump. There are one to four of these bumps within each rectangle. The leaf's coloration is also very striking. The two inner "stripes," formed by the first main veins from the leaf base to the tip, are always reddish-brown. The two or four outer stripes are green. The two differently colored areas are sharply demarcated.
The flowers are white and are borne on red, branched and very hairy inflorescences.
