Description
Alocasia baginda is native (likely*) to the state of Sarawak, a part of Malaysia on the island of Borneo, where it prefers to grow on limestone cliffs and slopes in the shady undergrowth of rainforests.
It is a small species, with leaves only about 20 cm long that are strikingly hard and thick, reminiscent of succulent plant leaves. Overall, they grow to about 30 cm in height and width. There are several popular cultivars of A. baginda. 'Dragon Scale Variegata' has particularly beautiful, strongly structured leaves with contrasting and sunken dark leaf veins, which gives the leaf a spectacular 3D effect, as well as strong variegation with fine, initially light yellow then white speckles. Certainly one of the most beautiful Alocasia species and also very easy to care for.
*The true origin of this species is unknown. It was only described as a distinct species in 2011, but was known as an ornamental plant long before that, yet no one knows where it actually comes from. Its morphologically closest relatives, A. regina and A. reginula, come from limestone habitats in Sarawak. It is therefore likely that A. baginda also originates from this area, but it has not yet been found there. Future expeditions could clarify this.
